Since 2014, The Dolby Creator Lab Grant has given independent filmmakers access to Dolby’s innovative tools and technologies - enabling them to fully realize their creative vision.

Kobi Libii on capturing the subtleties of unease and humor in Dolby

Recipient of a 2021 Dolby Creator Lab Grant, The American Society of Magical Negroes writer/director Kobi Libii has created a unique and challenging film about the distorted lenses Black people are often viewed through and the struggle to be seen for who they truly are as human beings.

Drop in on this exclusive interview with Kobi as he shares how Dolby helped him capture the interiority of the main character and immerse audiences in the Afrocentric qualities of the film.

Congratulations to Dìdi (弟弟), Love Me, and The American Society of Magical Negroes — three recent Dolby Creator Lab Grant films that premiered in Dolby Atmos at the festival, January 19–28.

Dìdi (弟弟)

Dìdi (弟弟) by writer/director Sean Wang follows an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy during the last month of summer before high school begins. The film won the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award and the Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast, and was acquired by Focus Features for theatrical release in 2024. Wang received his first Academy Award® nomination in the Best Documentary Short category for his film Nai Nai & Wai Po which will be available on Disney+ and Hulu starting next month.

The American Society of Magical Negroes

A clever and delightful fairytale-like romantic comedy about a young Black man who is recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making white people's lives easier. Kobi Libii is an actor/writer/director. The American Society of Magical Negroes is his directorial debut feature film and will have its US release through Focus Features on March 15, 2024.

Love Me

Set long after humanity’s extinction, Love Me is a totally unique and surprisingly affecting romance featuring a buoy and a satellite that meet online and fall in love. Directors Sam and Andy Zuchero are a filmmaking team from Topanga, California. Love Me is their first feature film and is also the recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize.

We then provide these filmmakers with access to Dolby technologies and expert post-production support to help their films connect with audiences who will love them.
